Proper thread tension is crucial for achieving high-quality embroidery. Incorrect tension can lead to issues such as thread breaks, looping, or bobbin thread appearing on the top of the design. To ensure optimal results, follow these steps:

Set Bobbin Tension:
- Use a bobbin tension gauge to measure the tension.
- For standard embroidery, adjust the bobbin tension to between 18 and 22 grams.
- When embroidering caps, set the tension up to 25 grams.
Adjust Upper Thread Tension:
- After setting the bobbin tension, use a top tension gauge to adjust the upper thread tension.
- For rayon threads, aim for a tension between 100 and 120 grams.
- For polyester threads, set the tension between 120 and 150 grams.
- Specialty threads may require different settings; ensure that approximately one-third of the bobbin thread is visible on the underside of a satin stitch.
Test Stitching:
- Sew a simple satin stitch and examine the underside.
- Proper tension should show one-third bobbin thread centered, with two-thirds top thread on either side.
- If the bobbin thread is too prominent, the upper tension may be too tight.
- If looping occurs, the upper tension might be too loose.
Regular Maintenance:
- Clean the bobbin case regularly to prevent dust buildup, which can affect tension.
- Ensure needles are in good condition, as damaged needles can cause thread breaks. By meticulously adjusting both bobbin and upper thread tensions and performing regular maintenance, you can achieve consistent, high-quality embroidery results.
