While Separation Studio NXT handles PNGs and JPEGs, saving your file as a 300 DPI TIFF delivers the highest level of detail and color clarity. Once your account is set up, download the full first-time installer from your account rather than an update package, then activate your key inside the License Manager.

Dial In Your Separations in Separation Studio NXT
When you open your graphic in Separation Studio NXT, choose the Spot Process separation option. Spot process color separations are built specifically for printing detailed, full color artwork onto dark garments using a targeted set of spot inks.
By default, the software splits your artwork into nine distinct color channels: Base White, Red, Blue, Gold, Purple, Green, Turquoise, Gray, and Top White. If you run a standard 6 color press, printing nine screens is simply not possible. Separation Studio NXT lets you merge channels using the Power Merge tool without losing essential detail.
Keep in mind that merging channels, like combining green and turquoise into blue or combining gray into white, is specific to this artwork and color palette. Channel merge choices will always change depending on the specific artwork, shirt color, and ink set you use for each project.
- Merge Green and Turquoise into Blue: Drag the Green and Turquoise channels directly onto the Blue channel to condense similar color values into one screen.
- Merge Gray into Underbase White: Drag the Gray channel into your Base White screen. This retains subtle detail beneath your top colors instead of using a standalone screen.
After merging, your artwork condenses down to six total channels: Base White, Red, Blue, Gold, Purple, and Top White.
Match Ink Libraries and Adjust Saturation
Next, match your digital channels to the actual plastisol inks sitting on your mixing shelf. Separation Studio NXT includes pre-loaded color palettes for ink systems like Wilflex Epic Rio Plastisol Inks. Swap out default channels for exact production shades like Rio Scarlet, Rio Royal Blue, Lemon Yellow, and Electric Purple.
Fine-tuning channel opacities guarantees proper ink coverage when generating spot process color separations:
- Underbase White: Increase high saturation up to 100 percent to make solid artwork areas fully opaque, removing unwanted halftone noise in solid elements.
- Top White: Lower the low saturation on your Top White channel. Decreasing white coverage across detailed skin tones prevents printed faces from looking chalky or pastel.
- Local Saturation Edits: Use the built-in brush tool to boost color intensity in targeted areas, such as adding yellow saturation directly to hair without shifting global face tones.

Once your spot process color separations are dialed in on screen, click print to transfer files directly into AccuRIP Emerald. Built-in integration removes manual file exports or complicated printer driver setup.
Inside AccuRIP Emerald, configure your film output settings:
- Media and Placement: Select 13x19 film sheets on your printer setup, choose center registration marks, and center artwork on the media. Using reliable Baselayr Waterproof Film ensures dark, crisp halftone dots during screen exposure.
- Halftone Frequency and Angle: Apply a standard 45 LPI (lines per inch) frequency with a 22.5-degree angle. This default configuration delivers clean halftone transitions for spot process color separations.

Choosing correct screen mesh counts ensures clean halftone detail while preventing ink buildup on press. A dependable rule of thumb for halftone printing is multiplying your LPI by four or five to establish your minimum mesh count. For a 45 LPI halftone pattern, your baseline mesh selection starts around 200 mesh.
To achieve optimal print quality on dark garments, separate your screen selections by channel function:
- Underbase and Top White Screens: Expose your white channels on Baselayr 230 Mesh Aluminum Screens to lay down a smooth, sharp white base without depositing excessive ink.

- Optimize Ink Consistency: If an ink feels stiff on press, mix in up to 5 percent Wilflex Epic Fashion Soft Base by weight. This lowers viscosity and improves ink flow through fine 280 mesh screens.
- Use Push Print Strokes: Execute a push print stroke to maintain a consistent blade angle and steady pressure, forcing ink cleanly through fine mesh panels.
- Flash the Base, Print Colors Wet-on-Wet: Flash your underbase white screen, then print color channels wet-on-wet without intermediate flashing.
- Run Setup Warm-up Shirts: Print four to six test garments before starting your production run. Wet-on-wet inks require a few print cycles to transfer slightly onto the back of subsequent screens. By garment five, your spot process color separations lock in with full color saturation and rich depth.
Evaluate Your Final Print Results
Stepping back to analyze your test prints reveals why the warm-up period is critical during wet-on-wet production runs. Comparing the digital proof, the initial test print, and the fifth test shirt shows how ink saturation builds and locks into its sweet spot on press.
On your first shirt off the press, colors can look slightly under-saturated because wet-on-wet inks have not yet established a thin film layer on the back of neighboring screens. By shirt four or five, that minor ink transfer creates a balanced, stable barrier. Colors become noticeably richer, dark tones deepen, and halftone transitions smooth out seamlessly across the garment.
