Whether you are running a fast-paced production shop, setting up a high school print lab, or learning the craft in your garage, having a clear reference guide on the wall keeps everyone on track. Screen printing involves precise variables, and skipping a simple step can mean a blown stencil or a bad wash test. That is why we created the Screen Printing in 10 Steps Poster.

Build a Consistent Visual Workflow in Your Shop

Screen printing is a blend of art and science. When a screen breaks down during exposure or ink washes out of a shirt, the problem usually traces back to an earlier step in the workflow. Having a screen printing in 10 steps quick reference chart right next to your exposure unit or washout booth creates instant clarity.

For shop managers and business owners, visual reminders reduce costly errors. New helpers can double check steps like degreasing or measuring FN-INK cure temperatures without halting production to ask questions. For educators in high school or college print rooms, this poster serves as a reliable teaching aid that reinforces proper shop safety, chemical usage, and technique.

The 10 Steps of Screen Printing Explained

To get clean, repeatable prints every single run, your shop needs to follow a structured system. Here is how the screen printing in 10 steps framework simplifies the process:

  1. Design - Create clean artwork, separate each print color carefully, and scale the design appropriately for your garment or substrate.
  2. Output - Print each color separation onto film positives. Make sure your film density is dark and opaque enough to block light effectively during exposure.
  3. Degrease- Use degreaser to clean your screen mesh thoroughly before coating. Removing oils, dust particles, and chemical residues prevents pinholes and stencil breakdown later on.
  4. Dry (Pre-Coating) - Allow screens to dry completely in a clean environment before applying emulsion. For best efficiency, dry your screens in a dedicated drying cabinet or a darkroom equipped with a fan and dehumidifier.
  5. Coat - Apply emulsion smooth and steady using a scoop coater. A standard 1:1 coat (one pass on the print side, one pass on the squeegee side) works well for standard jobs. For thicker ink deposits, try a 2:1 coating technique. Always dry coated screens with the shirt/substrate side facing down.
  6. Expose - Place your film positive against the screen and expose it using light. Always follow the recommended exposure times provided by your emulsion manufacturer for your specific exposure unit.
  7. Rinse - Wash out the unexposed emulsion until the stencil detail is fully open and crisp, then allow the screen to dry completely.
  8. Print - Tape off any exposed mesh between the frame and emulsion edge to prevent leaks. Register the job on your press, load your garments, set your off-contact, and start printing.
  9. Cure - Run your printed garment through a conveyor dryer or flash dryer to fully cure the ink layer. Verify your ink surface and sub-surface temperatures using a non-contact infrared thermometer or donut probe.
  10. Reclaim - Clear away excess ink and tape from the frame. Apply emulsion remover to both sides of the mesh, scrub, pressure wash the stencil away, then rinse and dry the screen for its next use.
